The Lowdown On Fortnite’s Weapons

While there are many different weapons in Fortnite, they can all be organised into a few major categories…

Pistols

Pistols are small, one-handed weapons. They include the Six Shooter and the Hand Cannon. They are useful at medium range and each shot can do lots of damage. However, there are some downsides – pistols do not have a large magazine size and firing rate varies widely between them. Sometimes pistols are labelled suppressed. These weapons are very useful for players who want to sneak around as their shots are much quieter than regular pistols.

Shotguns

Shotguns are the ultimate close-range weapons. Different varieties include the Heavy Shotgun, the Pump Shotgun and the Tactical Shotgun. Each variety has different statistics, but they are similar overall. Their shots spread damage across a wide area, so you don’t have to aim as carefully. Each shot is powerful, and you can take out an enemy in just one or two hits. However, all shotguns are slow to fire, have small magazines and long reload times.

Sniper Rifles

Sniper rifles are best for long-distance fights and almost useless up close. Your aim must be very good to use them successfully. They are powerful and a single headshot from the Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle or the Heavy Sniper Rifle is enough to knock an enemy out of the match. However, like shotguns, sniper rifles have small magazines and slow fire rates, and take a long time to reload.

Assault Rifles

Assault rifles work great at medium range and are decent at closer or longer distances if you don’t have a better option. They have large magazines and can fire very quickly. If you aren’t sure which weapons to carry, an assault rifle is a great choice. They are also the most varied weapon category, and some have unique features. For example, you may find an assault rifle with a scope that allows you to zoom in, like a sniper rifle. One variety even has a thermal scope, making it easier to spot enemies hiding.

Machine Guns

There were once several types of machine gun in Fortnite, but only one currently remains – the minigun. This weapon handles differently to others in the game. It doesn’t have a magazine, so you never need to reload it. When you first press the attack button, the minigun takes a second to start spinning before it launches its first shot. But if you keep holding down the button, it will spray shots t at an incredible rate and will do a lot of damage very quickly.

Submachine Guns (SMGs)

SMGs have large magazines and high fire rates. Each shot does only a little damage, but these weapons are still very effective if you use them correctly. They are not for pinpoint aiming. They spray shots out across a wide range, and this makes them good for close-up fights, much like shotguns.

Explosive Launchers

Explosive launchers include the Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher. These weapons do a huge amount of damage across a wide area. You don’t have to hit your enemy straight on, you just have to catch them inside the range of an explosion. Launchers are very useful near the end of a match, when a few players are left inside a small circle. Rockets and grenades can quickly destroy opponents’ towers, ramps and walls.
